Super creepy! This is honestly the first submission I've played where reading "Death is only the beginning" was genuinely scary. A dark, twisted and superb take on the theme.
The first shadow to appear in the game, the one running past, really set the mood right from the start. The ones which loiter around are also a nice touch, perhaps a bit too prominent to be as creepy. Which is fine, though, since the ones that attack you are plenty scary to deal with when they sneak up on you.
I think some sort of sound effect, a subtle one, to indicate there's an enemy nearby would really take it to the next level. Not necessarily a noise from the shadows themselves, more along the lines of the radio static in Silent Hill; an audible trigger which warns the player of danger and, more than anything, increases their paranoia.
This is a scary game, usually not the type of game I play but I like this one. It is curious and keeps tension :D I was waiting for some AAAAA this "silence" is creepy on a good way it suits! Well done!
Not me spending 5 minutes tyring to search for the dude that ran past at the beginning lol. Loved the game, super eerie and big fan of the interactive items that tell the story.
The atmosphere is great, very well achieved. The sound effects all mix together very well, and the effects of the flashlight have a unique charm. In particular, in the final area, the light gives a rich personality to the environment.
I like the level as a whole, well connected, with the shortcut at the church, well connected.
The particle effects in the notes are well thought, good way to make sure the player doesn't get lost
I don't know if it's intentional, but when coming back from the police station I couldn't 'walk' through the lower section of the stairs, I had to use jump to go up (the upper section was walkable though).
Footsteps are well done! I think you have a sound when you go over vegetation, and it really makes it feel you are stepping on a different surface.
No problem! It was my first jam as well. I'm trying to play as many submissions as I can since that's why we pretty much did the jam in the first place, so people can play our games. Once again, congrats to you and your team!
My thoughts on this:
1. The programming is really good for a game that looks to be in the pre alpha phase. The menu is pretty basic but that's to be expected at this stage. I could not reload for some reason so that's how I died lmao. That needs to be fixed but I think you guys know that.
2. What really stood out to me was the sound design. Very well placed, and high quality, if polished and refined further, it almost reminds me of Resident Evil. Love the ambient sounds/sound effects. Awesome!
3. Gameplay wise, it's like any other survival horror game out there. Mechanisms are very reminiscent of RE games. Hopefully if you do manage to finalize this, you can come up with more standout mechanisms, or if not, really deliver on the lore of the game.
4. Graphics wise, i know that the low poly and pixelated look is its intended design, but it's painful to the eyes after some point, probably because of the pixels. In my opinion i don't recommend the minecraft look, but you can still do low poly like how you did your kitty copter game, it could still serve its function well hahha sorry I have to be frank about this the style of the notes contrasted too much to the overall style of the world so that is jarring. But I really commend the environment design and the level design.
Final thoughts for a pre Alpha is a 7/10. Good job!!!
Hi, I appreciate this review so much. I agree with all the points that you raised. There is currently no reloading in the game, all you need is to pickup ammo, but we'll add that in the future. The 10 day deadline really forced us to cut out a lot of features we otherwise would've had. I love that you compared it to RE, because this was inspired by RE, Silent Hill, and Amnesia. Also glad to hear you like the level design and environments, because it's what I spent the most time on, and my first time to actually level design for a horror game. I'll definitely work to fix a lot of those issues. Thanks for trying it out :D
